COVID-19 UPDATES

To our patients,

As you know your care and safety and the safety of our team is our top priority.

Recommendations to dental offices are changing rapidly regarding shelter in place, social distancing and essential dental treatment. We are working hard to remain compliant with the recommendation by the American Dental Association, California Dental Association and our Governor that California dentists suspend all care other than essential and emergency treatment.

If you have any questions regarding your dental care or have urgent concerns, please call us or send a direct message through our website; we are here for you and will be seeing emergency patients.

Our phones will be answered during our normal business hours and, as always, we can be reached outside of the business hours for any emergency calls.

We are looking forward to returning to patient care and the opportunity to once again visit with our dental family of patients…we miss you all!

Thank you for being our patients!

How to Effectively Treat Gum Disease with Root Planing and Scaling

May 24, 2015 @ 09:00 AM — by Sharon B. Mateja, D.D.S.

Older female with a strong, healthy smileWhen you think about oral health, your first thought is probably the condition of your teeth, but the gums are just as important in ensuring that the smile is strong and healthy. Without a reliable anchor, the health of the teeth can be quickly compromised. In fact, tooth loss is a big concern for patients exhibiting advanced signs of gum disease. Restorative dentistry treatments help to rebuild healthy teeth and gums so that the smile is protected against further dental complications. While there are several treatment options to consider in cases of gum disease, root planing and scaling offers our Rancho Cucamonga patients the least invasive technique without compromising the effectiveness of treatment. It is for these reasons and more that it is the preferred gum disease treatment of Dr. Sharon Mateja.

Treatment

The idea of gum disease treatment can be scary, especially for those who already have apprehension regarding dental care. Fortunately, root planing and scaling offers patients a non-invasive treatment that is similar to a regular dental cleaning. With local anesthesia, patients can get through root planing and scaling treatment without pain and be ready to resume their day as soon as treatment is over.

Root planing and scaling treatment allows Dr. Mateja to thoroughly clean the teeth all the way down to the roots. This eliminates bacteria, plaque, and tartar from beneath the gum line, where it can cause infection, inflammation, and gum recession. First Dr. Mateja will scale the teeth, meaning that she will scrape away any built-up plaque and tartar. This is followed by root planing, a procedure in which any rough patches along the surface of the roots are smoothed out. By creating a smoother surface on the tooth roots, Dr. Mateja can make it more difficult for bacteria to cling to the teeth. This is important in preventing any future gum disease infection. To further ensure that all bacteria have been eliminated from beneath the gum line, Dr. Mateja may apply antibiotic fibers.

Benefits of Root Planing and Scaling

The greatest benefit of root planing and scaling is that it is a non-invasive treatment method that allows most patients to avoid oral surgery. Root planing and scaling can effectively reduce the symptoms of gum disease without the need for incisions, stitches, or a lengthy recovery period. Because it does not require surgery, root planing and scaling also tends to be more affordable than most alternate gum disease treatments. Root planing and scaling can also restore healthy gum tissue, eliminate gum pain and swelling, and prevent tooth loss and gum recession. Finally, by treating gum disease, we can improve your overall health.
